Missing teeth are more than a cosmetic issue that dramatically impacts your smile. Over time, the gaps between your teeth can compromise your health. Those missing teeth are at higher risk of causing gum disease, leading to significant health issues like heart disease and cancer. Thankfully, at All Smiles Dental in Clarksburg, West Virginia, and surrounding areas, Dr. Roger Suter offers several incredible denture options to help restore your smile.
How Denture Fitting Works
One of the most significant issues people have with dentures is how they can sometimes fit poorly, making it very difficult and occasionally dangerous to chew food. This is why Dr. Suter and his team take the time to ensure your dentures fit correctly.
The first step involves taking impressions of your mouth that are created to craft a temporary denture the doctor will fit into your mouth, while your mouth heals after the extraction is complete.
During the healing process, your jawbone and gums will change shape and start shrinking. You’ll need to visit the office every so often, so Dr. Suter can adjust your healing dentures, keeping them secure to prevent sores.
The healing process typically takes between 9-12 months. It’s important to wait before designing your permanent dentures until the healing process has concluded and your gums and jawbone have settled.
Once you visit our office, we will take more dental impressions of your mouth and send them off to our lab, working closely with technicians. We ensure you’ll have the best-looking teeth you’ll be able to wear comfortably for many years to come.
The Three Types of Dentures
We offer patients two different types of dentures, allowing you to choose the best quality dentures that fit within your budget. Our partial and complete dentures are removable ones that will enable you to easily remove them for cleaning and daily maintenance and can last over a decade when appropriately maintained.
However, among the downsides associated with traditional partial and complete dentures is that they can require unique products like false teeth adhesive and special cleaning solutions, which adds to the cost over time.
Then there are implanted-supported dentures that involve placing a post or posts directly into your jawbone. The posts are capped with porcelain crowns and used to fully stabilize the dentures between them. A benefit to implant-supported dentures is that patients can eat whatever they please and care for them just as they would for natural teeth, without special adhesives or cleaning solutions. These dentures also help patients to avoid hallowed cheeks and sunken jaw, which result from bone loss following tooth extraction.
Implant-supported dentures do, however, involve a brief period of discomfort following the placement of the implant post. During this time, Dr. Suter will fit you with temporary crowns over your posts until the tissue has healed sufficiently to implant the permanent crowns.
