Infected teeth are not only unhealthy, but they can also be painful and life-threatening for patients. At All Smiles Dental of Clarksburg, West Virginia, Drs. Roger Suter and Adam Boustany work alongside patients to help them determine the best treatment for their needs. Sometimes, our dentist may be able to save an infected tooth, while other times, it may need extraction. Many dentists in our area refer tooth extractions out of their offices. All Smiles Dental performs extractions in our state-of-the-art office so patients do not have the inconvenience or stress of going to another office for this life saving procedure.
What can be done about an infected tooth?
In some instances, Drs. Suter and Boustany may save the tooth with a procedure known as root canal therapy. It is a process during which the dentist accesses the inner canals of the tooth through a small hole to remove the dental nerve and infection, but you get to keep the roots and the tooth. The tooth is filled and then topped with a dental crown to offer an extra layer of protection and strength. However, there are times when the infection is too large or severe to treat with root canal therapy effectively. In situations such as this, the tooth will be extracted and replaced.
What types of extractions are performed at All Smiles Dental?
Our team is pleased to provide the two primary removal methods, including simple and surgical. A simple extraction is done when the tooth has already erupted and is within reach of the dentist. The area is locally anesthetized to ensure the patient is comfortable before the tooth is removed.. A surgical extraction is needed for teeth that are impacted, curved roots, or stuck underneath the gum line. Extractions should not be painful. All Smiles Dental uses topical gel and the best dental anesthetic. We also offer nitrous oxide (laughing gas) and Conscious oral sedation to make your appointment comfortable.
